It was exactly two Friday’s ago, August 2nd, 2013. Steve and I were both in Cleveland and had plans that night to go to Twilight at the Zoo with his family. He was only working a half day and said he wanted to go down to Ray’s at Kent State for some burgers. (Kent State is where we first hung out – read about that here).
He had picked me up at 11:30 on the dot – I had strict instructions to be on time, which I didn’t remember until he reminded me at 10:30… So we made it down to Kent, and were trying to find a parking spot in the middle of lunch hour. We drove in a circle and I called out a parking spot right in front of Ray’s, in which he drove past and said he “missed”.
He had finally found a spot right on this bridge where below was a park with waterfalls and little walking areas. This is when Steve suggested we walk down there and check it out. And I had no idea to what was about to happen.
We made it down there, walked to one spot where we stopped and Steve took my hands and started talking. A couple sentences later it hit me.. I immediately choked up. Steve then went down on one knee and all of a sudden, a train rolls by with the loudest horn I have ever heard.
It took me a while to say anything. The only thing I could say was “Are you crazy??” Until finally I said yes!!
Let me preface and say that the night before I had slashed my hand open trying to get the pit out of an avocado, so I had a huge Band-Aid on my ring finger (which you can see in some of the pictures). So poor Steve had to shove the ring over my Band-Aid.
Steve then said he had to run back up to the car and grab something. I thought maybe he immediately regretted his decision and was high-tailing off. But I just stood there and stared at my ring, completely shaken up and in shock. Until he came back down with all the fixings for a picnic.
The story behind the photographer: when Steve went up to grab the picnic supplies, a guy with a camera came up to me and said Congratulations and said he was down there taking pictures for one of his classes and happened to have caught everything. He showed me what he got so far and asked if I minded if he took more pictures of us.. and of course I said I had no problem – I was so happy he was there for that moment!
and my favorite…
It was honestly one of the best days of my life and I couldn’t be more excited. We ended the day by visiting family and getting poured on by rain at Twilight at the Zoo. Saturday, our parents threw us an amazing engagement party at my parents house. It was the best to have both of our families together celebrating!!
Fast forward to us getting back home in NYC, I immediately started stalking this photographer because I was so nervous that he wouldn’t reach out to me. After some Facebook stalking, I found that the photographer knew Steve’s stepmom and stepsister, and basically ruined the surprise they had for me! But I could not be more thankful that they did that for us! To be able to cherish this memory for the rest of our lives is awesome. (Thank you Tyler with Stack City Photography!)
And a HUGE thank you to all of our family in friends that were there to help us celebrate the weekend! You truly made it that much more special that we got to share these moments with us! We couldn’t be happier!
